Biography

Born into a Gujarati family from East Africa and raised near London, pianist and curator Keval Shah grew up surrounded by a vibrant mix of Bollywood scores, ghazals, Hindustani classical music, and devotional bhajans. After starting piano lessons at age seven, a school choir performance of Mozart at twelve ignited his passion for Western classical music. This led him to Cambridge University, where he discovered art-song and Lieder—a genre that perfectly synthesized his love for piano, singing, languages, and poetry. He pursued further training as a collaborative pianist at the Royal Academy of Music under Michael Dussek, Audrey Hyland, and Malcolm Martineau.

Shah’s career trajectory shifted dramatically at age 25 when he was appointed to the faculty of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, making him the youngest professor in the institution’s history. From this Finnish base, his international profile grew rapidly, marked by performances in Europe’s premier concert halls, prize-winning success at the Hugo Wolf Akademie Lied competition with duo partner Theodore Platt, and collaborations with legendary singers like Karita Mattila and Roderick Williams.

However, his time in Finland also prompted a deep reconnection with his Indian heritage, precipitating a fundamental shift in his creative outlook. Today, Shah’s artistic vision focuses on cross-cultural musical dialogue, innovative curation, and exploring music that transcends traditional boundaries of genre and style.

He collaborates regularly with a stellar roster of singers, including Fleur Barron, Erika Baikoff, Jess Dandy, Anna El-Khashem, and Aphrodite Patoulidou. Notable curated projects include the European premiere of a gospel-and-jazz-infused cycle by Shawn Okpebholo, and Eternity in an Hour—a project praised by The Times for its spiritual depth, which pairs Western art-song with a newly-commissioned Sanskrit cycle by Reena Esmail. In 2025, Shah premiered his first solo piano show at Flow Festival, performing an hour-long set of Esmail's music blending Hindustani classical, Gujarati folk, and Western textures.

Upcoming highlights include debuts at the Pierre Boulez Saal, L’Auditori Barcelona, and Fundación Juan March, alongside artistic residencies and curated series at Kings Place and Wigmore Hall. Shah will also release his debut solo album in 2027 featuring the complete piano music of Reena Esmail. His multi-faceted career encompasses recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, masterclasses at conservatoires around Europe and the US, including the  Juilliard School and the Royal College of Music, broadcasting for the BBC, and an upcoming documentary about his life by filmmaker Antti Vuori.
